A Job search can be an emotional rollercoaster, staying positive until you have secured a new position can be very difficult. When candidates first contact me, some have almost given up on their job search and feel like being unhappy in their current position is where they must stay. I tell candidates to embrace setbacks as it will allow you to focus on what you value the most in your job search and how best to land that job. Avoid negative thoughts. Don’t put all your eggs into one basket and don’t be afraid to ask for support. Searching for a full-time job is a full-time job itself. It requires stamina, determination and resilience so why do it alone? I have come up with 5 tips for staying positive when your job search seems to be everlasting.
1. Reflect and self-improve
When you’re eagerly awaiting feedback regarding an interview to find out it’s another “thanks but no thanks” it’s natural to you feel upset. You have been emotionally invested in the position, overthinking the interview, imagining yourself working there and planning how to get there and back. But don’t beat yourself up. Sometimes situations are out of your control and maybe it wasn’t the right team for you. If the feedback was based on not having enough experience and you really liked the company, work out how you can get the experience they need and reapply when you do have it. Focus on the areas you can improve on. Have you set up job alerts? Is your LinkedIn up to date? Registered with a recruiter? The small things can really make a difference and help you stand out from the competition. The recruitment process can be slow and frustrating but use this as a time to look at other opportunities and find out what you are really passionate about? This is an important decision don’t rush it.
2. Take care of yourself
When you are so focused on finding a new job, we can forget to take care of ourselves. Basic yet important routines we start forgetting and this can all add to a negative mindset. Ensure you are eating a balanced and nutritional diet, make time to exercise and go to sleep at a reasonable time. As a healthy body equals a healthy mind. I know that seems unimportant but when it comes to being active in the job market you must be quick to act and showing a potential employer your positivity at interview. This can get you one step closer to landing that job.
3. Enjoy your free time
As 1/3 of your life will be working why not enjoy this free time to enjoy yourself? Why not look at doing some voluntary or temporary work to build upon your experience and to keep your mind active. Spend time with friends and family, arrange to see a recruiter to allow them to understand more about yourself and what motivates you. Embrace this as a golden opportunity to give yourself a break. You don’t have to accept a job just because you interviewed for it. In a very competitive market staying ahead of the competition is key. Reflect on the offer and keep your options open. Don’t just accept because it’s the first offer you receive.
4. Positive perspective
Remain confident in your ability even when the going gets tough. A successful job search can take up to 6 months. Believe in yourself, even if you don’t. Job hunting is psychological. If you think you can, you can. Start believing you will, and you will land that dream job. Don’t get discouraged when you get knock backs. Use and embrace it. Don’t underestimate yourself. If you are reading a job description and it sounds daunting. Maybe the business is looking for someone who has 3 years accountancy background, but you have only 2 years. Why not apply? You may have something more to offer that you are overlooking.
5. Find Support
Ensuring you have a sounding board to run through opportunities that arise and decisions that need to be made is essential to your success. This ideally needs to include a close friend, family member who knows you well, a co-worker who knows your strengths in a professional environment and an industry professional who knows the market place such as a recruiter.
